Axert (almotriptan) is a selective serotonin receptor agonist called a triptan. Migraine headaches happen when blood vessels are too open and allow too much blood in the brain. Axert (almotriptan) tightens the blood vessels which relieves the pain.Ergomar (ergotamine) is an ergot alkaloid. It tightens the blood vessels in your brain to relieve the pain of your headaches.

  • Take Axert (almotriptan) at the first sign of a migraine. You can take another dose if you don't feel better after 2 hours. Don't take more than two doses every 24 hours.
  • Axert (almotriptan) can make you feel dizzy or tired when you first start taking it. Don't drive or do anything that requires concentration until you know how your body reacts to it.
  • If you finish the entire month's supply of Axert (almotriptan) before your next refill or if you have more than 4 migraines a month, talk to your doctor to see if you should try something else.
  • Axert (almotriptan) can cause nausea or tightness in the chest or throat. Talk to your doctor if it bothers you.
  • Avoid if you're pregnant or think you may be pregnant since it can harm the fetus.
  • Take as soon as you feel the migraine coming on.
  • You may be more sensitive to cold since Ergomar (ergotamine) affects the circulation of your blood. Dress warmly.
  • Don't use Ergomar (ergotamine) excessively. The most you can take is 3 tablets per day or 5 tablets per week.
  • Don't use with triptans if you're taking Ergomar (ergotamine).
