Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) is a combination pill that contains three antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. It treats HIV infections by preventing the virus from attacking your immune cells and multiplying.Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) is a combination medication that stops the replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) within important cells of the body. Emtricitabine and tenofovir both prevent the virus from taking over normal functions of the cell for its own purposes.

        Kidneys and liver

        • Not recommended for patients with kidney damage.
        • Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) is not yet approved for treating Hepatitis B. If you have hepatitis B and HIV, don't stop taking Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) without talking to your doctor since your hepatitis can get worse. Your doctor will check your liver regularly.
        • People on Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) have reported kidney damage, which can be made worse if you take high doses of anti-inflammatory drugs called NSAIDs (Motrin/Advil, Aleve, Mobic, Voltaren, etc.). Call your doctor if you develop bone pain, pain in your arms or legs, or pain or weakness in your muscles. Your doctor will do blood tests to check your kidneys regularly while you're taking Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir).
        • Can cause unusual dreams, or kidney or liver damage.
        • Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) is removed from the body by the kidneys, so the dose of Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) needs to be lowered if you have any kidney problems.
        • Before starting Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir), your doctor will test you for hepatitis B to make sure you're not infected. People who've stopped Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) and had chronic hepatitis B have suffered from liver damage and failure.
        • People on Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) have reported kidney damage, which can be made worse if you take high doses of anti-inflammatory drugs called NSAIDs (Motrin/Advil, Aleve, Mobic, Voltaren, etc.).         • Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) might be an option for HIV treatment if other HIV drug combinations haven't worked for you.
        • There are drug assistance programs available either through the government (AIDS Drug Assistance Program aka. ADAP) or through the drug manufacturer which can help with drug costs and co-pays.
        • First-line treatment for preventing HIV infection in combination with other HIV medications.
        • Only has to be taken once a day.
        • Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) prevents and treats HIV infection.
        • Used for preventing HIV infection in case you've been accidentally exposed or if you're in danger of being exposed.
        Downsides and risks

        • Must be taken with a light meal which includes fat.
        • Cannot be taken with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) like Prilosec or Prevacid. If you need to take an acid reducer, try an antacid like calcium carbonate either 2 hours before or 4 hours after Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir). Drugs like Pepcid or Zantac (H2RAs) may also be an option, but these should be taken 12 hours before or 4 hours after Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir).
        • Not recommended for patients who have a significantly high level of viral cells or have a very low level of immune cells.
        • Not recommended for patients with kidney damage.
        • Can weaken your bones.
        • Has to be taken at the same time every day or your body can become resistant to the medication.
        • Can't be taken on its own to treat HIV.
        • Can cause unusual dreams, or kidney or liver damage.
        • Can't be taken with any drugs containing lamivudine since both are so similar to each other.
        • Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) is removed from the body by the kidneys, so the dose of Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) needs to be lowered if you have any kidney problems.
        Tips from our pharmacists for people taking the medication

        • Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) should be taken at the same time everyday.
        • For missed doses, take one if you remember within 12 hours of your regularly scheduled time. Don't take two doses at the same time.
        • Take Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) with at least a light meal with 12 grams of fat. Some examples that the makers of Complera (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) list are toast with peanut butter & fruit, roast beef sandwich, or a grilled chicken caesar salad.
        • Immediately report any signs of liver problems (jaundice, dark urine, yellowing of eyes, etc.) or sensitivity reactions (rash, fever, fatigue, difficulty breathing, etc.) to your doctor.
        • Since Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) is only taken once a day, try taking it at the same time as your other HIV medications.
        • If being used for kids, the dose of Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) will continue to change as they grow, so keep in touch with their doctor.
        • Keep an eye out for any new symptoms or side effects you may start to feel while taking Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) and report them to your doctor.
        • Practice safe sex while taking Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) since the medication will not stop you from passing HIV to other people.
