Edurant (rilpivirine) is a good HIV drug that has to be used in combination with other HIV medications in patients who are new to treatment or are looking for alternatives to a current HIV regimen.

  • If swallowing a tablet is difficult, you can dissolve Intelence (etravirine) in water and drink it.
  • Can used by children 6 years and older.
Downsides
  • Must be taken in combination with other HIV drugs to treat HIV. Cannot be taken alone as treatment.
  • Must be taken with a meal.
  • Cannot be taken with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) like Prilosec or Prevacid. If you need to take an acid reducer, try an antacid like calcium carbonate either 2 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant (rilpivirine). Drugs like Pepcid or Zantac (H2RAs) may also be an option, but these should be taken 12 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant (rilpivirine).
  • Not recommended for patients who have a significantly high level of viral cells or have a very low level of immune cells.
  • Not recommended for children under 12 years old.
  • Taken twice daily.
  • Should be taken after meals.
  • Not for use in patients who are new to HIV medications.
  • Intelence (etravirine) can interact with a significant number of drugs.
