Upsides

Downsides
  • Odefsey (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir) has to be taken with a light meal.
  • Cannot be taken with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) like Prilosec or Prevacid. If you need an acid reducer, try taking an antacid like calcium carbonate either 2 hours before or 4 hours after Odefsey (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir). Drugs like Pepcid or Zantac (H2RAs) may also be an option, but these should be taken 12 hours before or 4 hours after Odefsey (emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir).
  • Not recommended for patients who have a significantly high level of viral cells or have a very low level of immune cells.
  • Can cause abnormal heart rhythm.
  • If you're taking Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir) to stop you from getting HIV, you should continue having safe sex since it won't protect you from other sexually transmitted infections.
  • If you're taking Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir) to stop you from getting HIV, you have to get blood tests every 3 months to check for overall health and to make sure you don't have HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
  • People with poorly functioning kidneys shouldn't take Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir).
  • Can weaken your bones.
  • If you have HIV as well as Hepatitis B and stop taking Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir) suddenly, your hepatitis may get worse.
