Works with other medications to treat HIV infection, or works alone to prevent HIV infection.

Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir) is a versatile, first-choice HIV medication that is used in combination with other HIV medications to treat and prevent HIV infections.

Treats HIV infection.

Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) is a convenient 3-in-1 medication used to treat HIV infections. It is a second-line choice due to its high incidence of undesired side effects.

Upsides
  • Contains two first-choice medications which can be used in combination with other drugs to treat HIV infection.
  • Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir) is also a first-choice option to be used for preventing HIV.
  • Take only once daily, with or without food.
  • Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) combines three medications into one tablet, so it's easy to take.
  • Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) might be an option for HIV treatment if other HIV drug combinations haven't worked for you.
  • There are drug assistance programs available either through the government (AIDS Drug Assistance Program aka. ADAP) or through the drug manufacturer which can help with drug costs and co-pays.
Downsides
  • If you're taking Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir) to stop you from getting HIV, you should continue having safe sex since it won't protect you from other sexually transmitted infections.
  • If you're taking Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir) to stop you from getting HIV, you have to get blood tests every 3 months to check for overall health and to make sure you don't have HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
  • People with poorly functioning kidneys shouldn't take Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir).
  • Can weaken your bones.
  • If you have HIV as well as Hepatitis B and stop taking Truvada (emtricitabine / tenofovir) suddenly, your hepatitis may get worse.
  • Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) can increase your risk of depression, and should be used with caution you have a history of seizures or osteoporosis.
  • Women should avoid becoming pregnant while taking Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) and for 12 weeks after stopping Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir).
  • Might be inconvenient if used in patients with poorly functioning kidneys because there is no way to adjust the dose of the individual drug components.
