Compare Atripla vs. Edurant
Head-to-head comparisons of medication uses, side effects, ratings, and more.
Treats HIV infection.
Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) is a convenient 3-in-1 medication used to treat HIV infections. It is a second-line choice due to its high incidence of undesired side effects.
Works with other medications to treat HIV infection.
Edurant (rilpivirine) is a good HIV drug that has to be used in combination with other HIV medications in patients who are new to treatment or are looking for alternatives to a current HIV regimen.
Upsides
- Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) combines three medications into one tablet, so it's easy to take.
- Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) might be an option for HIV treatment if other HIV drug combinations haven't worked for you.
- There are drug assistance programs available either through the government (AIDS Drug Assistance Program aka. ADAP) or through the drug manufacturer which can help with drug costs and co-pays.
- Generally well tolerated.
- Taken only once daily.
- Edurant (rilpivirine) is available in other combination tablets.
- Can be used in patients with mild or moderate kidney damage.
Downsides
- Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) can increase your risk of depression, and should be used with caution you have a history of seizures or osteoporosis.
- Women should avoid becoming pregnant while taking Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir) and for 12 weeks after stopping Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir).
- Might be inconvenient if used in patients with poorly functioning kidneys because there is no way to adjust the dose of the individual drug components.
- Must be taken in combination with other HIV drugs to treat HIV. Cannot be taken alone as treatment.
- Must be taken with a meal.
- Cannot be taken with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) like Prilosec or Prevacid. If you need to take an acid reducer, try an antacid like calcium carbonate either 2 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant (rilpivirine). Drugs like Pepcid or Zantac (H2RAs) may also be an option, but these should be taken 12 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant (rilpivirine).
- Not recommended for patients who have a significantly high level of viral cells or have a very low level of immune cells.
- Not recommended for children under 12 years old.
