Treats hepatitis C.

Epclusa (velpatasvir / sofosbuvir) is a combination medicine that treats hepatitis C, and has been shown very effective at curing the disease in many people. It is very expensive.

Treats hepatitis C genotype 4.

Technivie (ombitasvir / paritaprevir / ritonavir) is effective in treating genotype 4 hepatitis C infection, but isn't a preferred choice because of its drug interactions.

Upsides
  • Epclusa (velpatasvir / sofosbuvir) is the first medicine approved to treat all genotypes of hepatitis C.
  • Most people only have to take one pill of Epclusa (velpatasvir / sofosbuvir) once a day for 12 weeks. If you have severe liver damage, you'll have to take it with ribavirin.
  • It can be taken with or without food.
  • The most common side effects are usually mild, including fatigue and headache.
  • Technivie (ombitasvir / paritaprevir / ritonavir) showed very high cure rates for patients with genotype 4 hepatitis C when taken together with ribavirin.
  • Technivie (ombitasvir / paritaprevir / ritonavir) by itself is only two pills taken at the same time every day.
Downsides
  • Epclusa (velpatasvir / sofosbuvir) can only be absorbed properly in an acidic stomach so heartburn meds can affect how well it works.
  • Epclusa (velpatasvir / sofosbuvir) can cause serious drops in heart rate when it is taken with amiodarone.
  • If you have severe liver disease, you'll have to take Epclusa (velpatasvir / sofosbuvir) with another medication called ribavirin.
  • Technivie (ombitasvir / paritaprevir / ritonavir) can only be used for genotype 4 hepatitis C infection, and other therapies are more preferred than Technivie (ombitasvir / paritaprevir / ritonavir).
  • It can’t be used if you have moderate to severe liver disease (decompensated cirrhosis).
  • It must be taken with ribavirin, which means additional pills. Technivie (ombitasvir / paritaprevir / ritonavir) is not a good choice for people with kidney disease.
  • Technivie (ombitasvir / paritaprevir / ritonavir) interacts with many medications.
