Intelence (etravirine) can be an option for patients who are already taking HIV medications but are in need of improving their current HIV drug regimen.

Treats HIV infection.

Rescriptor (delavirdine) is a good alternative, but it's not a first-choice medicine due to its 3 times a day dosing and is not as effective compared to other HIV medications.

Upsides
  • Intelence (etravirine) has a lower rate of failure due to single HIV mutations compared to other HIV drugs in its class.
  • Can be used in patients with kidney damage.
  • If swallowing a tablet is difficult, you can dissolve Intelence (etravirine) in water and drink it.
  • Can used by children 6 years and older.
  • People with mild to moderate kidney damage can use this medication.
  • Can take with or without food.
  • Can crush pill form and mix with water if you have trouble swallowing.
Downsides

  • Should be taken after meals.
  • Not for use in patients who are new to HIV medications.
  • Intelence (etravirine) can interact with a significant number of drugs.
  • Doesn't prevent disease transmission, so you must use a condom during sex.
  • Must take at least 1 hour before or after antacids or didanosine.
  • There are multiple drug interactions with Rescriptor (delavirdine), so you must talk to your doctor before starting any new medications.
