Head-to-head comparisons of medication uses, side effects, ratings, and more.

Sancuso (granisetron)

Prescription only

Emend (aprepitant)

Prescription only
Helps reduce nausea and vomiting.

Sancuso (granisetron) is a good choice to reduce nausea and vomiting if it's hard for you to take oral medicines, but is very expensive.

Stops nausea and vomitting caused by chemotherapy and surgery.

Emend (aprepitant) is used with other medicines to stop nausea and vomiting that can happen after chemotherapy and surgery.

  • Each Sancuso (granisetron) patch provides around-the-clock relief from nausea and vomiting for up to 7 days without having to re-dose and without problems associated with missing a dose.
  • May be a better option for some people on multi-day chemotherapy regimens.
  • Emend (aprepitant) can help stop nausea that lasts several days after receiving chemo, which is harder to control than the nausea that starts immediately.
  • Emend (aprepitant) can also be used to stop nausea in adults that happens after surgery.
  • Emend (aprepitant) also comes as a liquid for children over 6 months and adults who can't take pills.
  • The side effects of Emend (aprepitant) are usually mild and include hiccups and fatigue.
  • Must be applied at least 24 hours before the scheduled chemotherapy.
  • Sancuso (granisetron) has the possibility of interacting with antidepressants that can result in a dangerous build up of serotonin.
  • Must restrict from certain activites such as swimming and strenous excerise while wearing Sancuso (granisetron).
  • Should be used with caution in people with any heart condition.
  • Emend (aprepitant) only stops nausea and vomiting from happening. It won't work if you already have nausea and vomiting.
  • Emend (aprepitant) has to be used in combination with other medicines to treat chemotherapy related nausea.
  • Emend (aprepitant) needs to be taken for the first three days of chemo.
