Edurant (rilpivirine) is a good HIV drug that has to be used in combination with other HIV medications in patients who are new to treatment or are looking for alternatives to a current HIV regimen.
Upsides
- First-choice treatment for HIV in patients with good kidney function.
- One tablet contains four different HIV medications.
- Stribild (elvitegravir / cobicistat / emtricitabine / tenofovir) is only taken once daily.
- There are assistance programs available through the manufacturer of Stribild (elvitegravir / cobicistat / emtricitabine / tenofovir) if you need help paying for high insurance copays.
- Generally well tolerated.
- Taken only once daily.
- Edurant (rilpivirine) is available in other combination tablets.
- Can be used in patients with mild or moderate kidney damage.
Downsides
- Can't be used in patients with kidney problems.
- Can interact with many other drugs.
- Must be taken in combination with other HIV drugs to treat HIV. Cannot be taken alone as treatment.
- Must be taken with a meal.
- Cannot be taken with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) like Prilosec or Prevacid. If you need to take an acid reducer, try an antacid like calcium carbonate either 2 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant (rilpivirine). Drugs like Pepcid or Zantac (H2RAs) may also be an option, but these should be taken 12 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant (rilpivirine).
- Not recommended for patients who have a significantly high level of viral cells or have a very low level of immune cells.
- Not recommended for children under 12 years old.
