Upsides
- Zepatier (elbasvir / grazoprevir) can cure hepatitis C, which means the virus can't be detected in the blood 3 months after completing treatment.
- If you only need to take Zepatier (elbasvir / grazoprevir), it’s just 1 pill once a day for 12 or 16 weeks.
- Zepatier (elbasvir / grazoprevir) can be taken by people with kidney problems, even those on hemodialysis.
- Zepatier (elbasvir / grazoprevir) usually has mild side effects.
- Unlike Viekira Pak, Viekira XR (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) is only three pills that is taken all at once.
- Similar to Viekira Pak, Viekira XR (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) has a 95% to 100% cure rate.
- Common side effects are manageable and include feeling nauseous, tired, itching, or rash.
- Viekira XR (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) can also be used to treat genotype 1 hepatitis C if you have a liver transplant.
Downsides
- Zepatier (elbasvir / grazoprevir) doesn't work for all genotypes of hepatitis C. It should only be used for genotype 1 or 4.
- Some people need to take Zepatier (elbasvir / grazoprevir) together with another medication called ribavirin. Ribavirin has its own set of side effects.
- You shouldn’t take Zepatier (elbasvir / grazoprevir) if you have moderate to severe liver disease.
- If you've ever had hepatitis B virus infection, the virus could become active again during or after treatment with Zepatier (elbasvir / grazoprevir). Before starting it, your doctor will do blood tests to check for hepatitis B virus.
- Viekira XR (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) is a combination of 3 different medications which may be hard to take if you don't like swallowing a lot of pills.
- You may need to take an additional medication called ribavirin with Viekira XR (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir).
- If you are taking ethinyl estradiol-containing medications, you will need another form of birth control during and for 2 weeks after using Viekira XR (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir).
- Should not be used if you experienced severe rash after taking ritonavir (Norvir).
- Your doctor will need to take frequent blood tests during the first 4 weeks, and periodically after to monitor your liver function.
