Stops nausea caused by chemotherapy or surgery.

Aloxi (palonosetron) is given one time to effectively reduce nausea from chemotherapy or surgery. In some cases, it will only help for a short period of time.

Upsides
  • Zofran (ondansetron) comes in many different forms that you don't have to swallow, such as a film that goes on the tongue or a dissolving pill.
  • Zofran (ondansetron) is fast-acting and starts working within 30 minutes.
  • Unlike some other nausea medicines, the side effects for Zofran (ondansetron) are relatively mild.
  • Aloxi (palonosetron) can be given through the same IV line as your chemotherapy - as a one-time dose 30 minutes before treatment starts.
  • Starts working in 30 minutes.
  • Aloxi (palonosetron) can be used in children as young as 1 month of age.
Downsides
  • Zofran (ondansetron) doesn't treat nausea and vomiting that's already happening. It only works to prevent future episodes.
  • High doses of Zofran (ondansetron) can cause problems with heart rhythm if you're at risk.
  • If you are also taking antidepressants, you are at higher risk of developing a dangerous condition called serotonin syndrome. Talk with your doctor about your risks.
  • If your chemotherapy is very likely to make you feel queasy or if you have nausea after surgery, Aloxi (palonosetron) is usually only helpful for one day.
  • Can only be used to prevent nausea and vomiting, not to treat if it's already happening.
