Downsides

  • Trecator (ethionamide) should not be taken alone to treat your tuberculosis. You must take it with at least one, sometimes two, other drugs.
  • It is recommended you take Trecator (ethionamide) by directly observed therapy or in front of a health worker.
  • Like other tuberculosis drugs, Trecator (ethionamide) has to be given for several months in order for it work properly (usually 6 months).
  • Trecator (ethionamide) cannot be used for latent (or non-active) tuberculosis or for tuberculosis that has spread outside the lungs.

Alcohol
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Trecator (ethionamide) because it can cause a psychotic episode.
  • Do not drink alcohol with Trecator (ethionamide).
Food
  • Take Trecator (ethionamide) with or without food. Take it with food if it upsets your stomach.
Kidneys and liver
  • You cannot take Trecator (ethionamide) if you have severe liver damage. Tell your doctor if you have had or are waiting for a liver transplant.
Pain
  • If you notice any vision changes, with or without eye pain, let your doctor know as soon as possible. You will need to get frequent eye exams while taking Trecator (ethionamide).
