Risks and Warnings for Viramune (nevirapine)

    • History of liver damage
    • Alcohol intake

    Liver damage has been reported in patients who use Viramune (nevirapine). Your doctor might do blood tests to check your liver regularly. If you experience nausea, decreased appetite, fatigue, or notice yellowing of the eyes/skin, or dark urine, talk to your doctor right away.

    This is a black box warning. The FDA requires this warning when there is a significant risk of serious or life-threatening effects that anyone taking the drug should consider.

Pregnancy

Research studies with animals haven’t found a risk to unborn babies, but it hasn’t been properly studied in humans.

  • Liver damage has been reported in patients who use Viramune (nevirapine). Your doctor might do blood tests to check your liver regularly. If you experience nausea, decreased appetite, fatigue, or notice yellowing of the eyes/skin, or dark urine, talk to your doctor right away.
  • Though liver damage and severe skin reactions are rare, the effects can be life treatening if they do occur. To ensure your safety when starting Viramune (nevirapine), your doctor will closely monitor your health and lab results for the first 18 weeks of therapy. It is important that you keep all your scheduled appointments and lab tests. Pay close attention to any unusual side effects and report them to your doctor.
  • Patients experiencing liver damage and skin reactions while on Viramune (nevirapine) are also at risk of experiencing muscle pain (myopathy), and muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis). Report any symptoms of muscle pain, weakness, and dark urine to your doctor.
