Downsides

  • Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) can only treat genotype 1 hepatitis C and must be taken twice a day.
  • You might have to take to take Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) with an additional medication called ribavirin. This may not be a good option if you are uncomfortable swallowing pills.
  • If you take medications containing ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen), you will need another form of birth control during and for 2 weeks after using Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir).
  • Should not be used if you experienced severe rash after taking ritonavir (Norvir).
  • Your doctor will need to take frequent blood tests during the first 4 weeks and periodically after to monitor your liver function.

    • Hepatitis B infection

    Before you can start taking Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir), your doctor will test you for hepatitis B. If you've ever had hepatitis B, taking Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) can cause a hepatitis B infection to start up again, which can be very dangerous if it's not caught in time. Tell your doctor if you've ever been treated for hepatitis B.

    This is a black box warning. The FDA requires this warning when there is a significant risk of serious or life-threatening effects that anyone taking the drug should consider.

Interactions
  • Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) has many drug interactions which can result in more side effects from your medicines or decreased effect of Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir). Alcohol
  • Do not drink alcohol within 4 hours of taking Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir).
Kidneys and liver
  • Before you can start taking Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir), your doctor will test you for hepatitis B. If you've ever had hepatitis B, taking Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) can cause a hepatitis B infection to start up again, which can be very dangerous if it's not caught in time. Tell your doctor if you've ever been treated for hepatitis B.
  • Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) can cause increase an enzyme in your liver called ALT. For women, this is more likely to happen if you are on birth control containing estrogens. These medications should be stopped before starting Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) and you should talk to your doctor about alternative birth control options while you are taking this medication. Speak to your doctor right away if you experience fatigue, weakness, lack of appetite, nausea, yellowing of the eyes, or discolored feces as these may be signs of liver damage.
  • Speak to your doctor if you've had a liver transplant and are on cyclosporine as your doctor may need to check your blood drug level and adjust the dose while you're on Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir).
  • Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) can also be used to treat genotype 1 hepatitis C if you have a liver transplant.
  • Viekira Pak (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir) can only treat genotype 1 hepatitis C and must be taken twice a day.
